Hyperthermia (heat exhaustion or heat stroke) can occur when an athlete's body temperature reaches or exceeds 102 degrees. Warm environments and pronounced exertion can put the individual in a life threatening situation requiring emergency hyperthermia first aid. Immediate lowering of the core temperature can make the difference between recovery and significant injury or death. A frozen Ice Compression Wrap at the field can gain precious minutes for a stricken athlete by beginning the process of lowering core body temperature while being transported from the field to an emergency care facility. The Cold One Hyperthermia Vest is constructed of 3 stretchable layers and 2 components. Layers 1. Outer layer of Nitrogren Blown Neoprene 2. Middle layer of sewn in re-freezable gels 3. Inner layer of rubber impregnated linen (protects skin from cryoburn).
Components 1. The vest itself 2. Soft sided cooler The entire cooling vest and its components can be frozen in about 2 hours in a residential or commercial freezer or refrigerator freezer. Once frozen, the vest can be transported to the practice field or event in the frozen soft sided cooler. The vest will maintain the frozen state for a minimum of 3 hours in the soft sided cooler. Care should be taken not to expose the vest and cooler to direct sunlight to help maintain the frozen state. In the event the trainer or coach either suspects an athlete is at risk of hyperthermia by symptoms or measurements from a wireless monitor, quick action is necessary. The Cold One Hyperthermia vest can be applied in the amount of time it takes to remove shoulder padding and put on the vest; as easy as putting on a warm-up jacket. The vest is adjustable by velcro straps both front and back to insure a snug fit. The stretchability of the 3 layers create "Cold Compression Therapy" which drives the cold deep into the soft tissues of the upper body and within seconds reduces the core body temperature. Immediately transport the victim to an ice bath and/or medical facility. The wrap should be worn in transit. Once applied, the gels will gradually thaw within 10-15 minutes so the vest is safe to use and cannot "over-ice" or cryoburn the skin. The vest can be worn over a shirt or against the skin.
